It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Captain James Peter Olander.

Peter arrived in Bermuda at the age of two when his parents came to serve on the United States Bases at Morgan’s Point and Kindley Field.

Peter’s second home was at sea, starting as a young boy on Bermuda fishing boats, and later on the R/V Sir Horace Lamb. Peter was a Captain in the United States Merchant Marine, serving during the conflicts in Vietnam, Panama, Somalia and the Persian Gulf in a career that spanned 43 years.

Locally, he operated Albatross Charters & Fisheries, was a two time winner of the of the World Cup Billfish Tournament and a member of the Fisheries Board.

Peter is lovingly remembered by his family: his wife, Jeannie, his children Hans [Martha] and Louise; his three grandchildren, Luisa [Damjan], Pansy and Eliza. He is also survived by his siblings: Robert, Thomas, Edward and Jennifer. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Mary.

At Peter’s request, his family has made private arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to PALS Bermuda at P.O. Box DV 19, Devonshire, DV BX Bermuda www.pals.bm.
